The Eleven Plus Test is a selective test taken during September of year 6 as a means to decide which children gain places at grammar schools. Testing is optional. Different schools often have different tests. Subjects that may be tested including English (comprehension and sometimes essays); Verbal reasoning; Mathematics, and Verbal Reasoning (including spatial reasoning).
In some areas of England every child sits the same test, organised by the Local Authority, unless they decide to opt out (e.g. Buckinghamshire and Kent). In other regions, parents need to register their child for each school or group of schools and they may sit different tests for different areas on different dates. Sometimes schools share the same test.
Basic Research for 11+ tests

First check whether your child is automatically entered for the 11+ test or you have to register, noting the deadline.

Find out who the test supplier, eg GL Assessment or CEM, or another supplier. Find out which areas are covered e.g. (English; Verbal Reasoning; Mathematics; Non-verbal reasoning) and when it is held and where.

Find out what the format of the test is e.g. paper based and whether answers are written in a booklet or marked on an answer-sheet, or computer based.

Find out what the admissions criteria is from the published admissions policies of the school

Find out if there are any familiarisation material or mock tests.
How to pass the 11+
The simple answer is to prepare. Be on top of school work, read widely, complete KS2 maths and learn the concepts of NVR questions.
To prepare for comprehension, read plenty of books and practice comprehension tests.
For mathematics, try and cover year 6 maths and practice year 6 SATs maths papers. These are free to download from: KS2 Maths SATsPapers
For verbal reasoning, compile wordlists, recall words with similar meanings, as well as opposite meanings. Build vocabulary
For non-Verbal reasoning (NVR) and spatial reasoning, learn the principles, concepts, tricks & tips and keep practicing different type of questions.
