CEM 11 Plus

Reading 11+  -  Children's Educational Material 11+ TM

There are two grammar schools in Reading and they share the same exam as Slough grammar schools. The schools still have an old-fashioned attitude to admissions and have catchment areas.  The Kendrick and Readings Boys' schools use tests from CEM Centre for Evaluation & Monitoring®.  Reading Girl's School selective stream use tests from NFER ®. CEM® Centre and NFER® 11+ tests  are not tutor-proof and are one of the easiest to prepare for. Complete solutions are available using WordBuilder.co.uk and CoolCleverKids.co.uk.

We guarantee your child will score the minimum qualifying score for a grammar school, if you use our online course and mock papers (all supplied), or your money back. Click here.

The schol claim no additional preparation is necessary. This does not mean preparation is not beneficial. Clearly, it will be extremely beneficial. Has anyone ever heard of a GCSE, A level or degree test in which preparation is not necessary? Why do schools prepare children for KS2 Sats tests?

There will be other schools that will be using the same tests as the schools. If your child takes the test after this date and is found to have taken the same test, then they will use the raw scores from the first test he took, even if it was at another school. This is NOT a bespoke test and it will  be the same test as in Slough.

Sats, GCSE, `A` Levels are degrees are curriculum based and not designed to demonstrate academic potential without preparation. The logic for designing such tests for grammar schools is inconsistent with the education system and the evidence appears non-existent. A sensible approach would be admission on the basis of Sats tests in English, Maths and Science (curriculum based and taught).

The integrity of tests were challenged as the region had morning and afternoon tests as well as supplementary sitting in January 2015. The response from the Consortium was:

"The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring at Durham University, who developed the 11+ assessment, have confirmed that ‘we are confident that this 11+ test is a fair and robust assessment. We have every confidence in the process of morning and afternoon assessment sessions. CEM have rigorous data analysis processes which we are confident would identify any questions showing bias to either morning of afternoon candidates.’

At this time Durham University knew an interim High Court Injunction was granted to Warwickshire County Council in September 2013 and amended in September 2014 preventing information gleaned from children appearing on the basis children can remember content and even one word is the difference between gaining a grammar school place and  not. As such this statement is hard to explain as Warwickshire use similar tests from Durham University and even repeat questions.

Reading Boys & Kendrick School CEM 11+ ® Test
There will be two test papers containing a mixture of questions on verbal reasoning and comprehension, non-verbal reasoning and mathematical reasoning. Some schools use their own 20-minute Writing papers.

Each paper is approximately 50 minutes in duration and will be divided into timed sections, and instructions will be given on an audio soundtrack.

Most questions are multiple choice and all answers are marked on a separate machine-readable answer sheet. There will be a short break between the two test papers.

11+ Tourism: Free Mock Tests

Under the Greenwich ruling all children, of the appropriate age, have a legal right to take any 11+ exam set by any authority and cannot be denied the opportunity to sit an exam solely on the basis of their address.

The Office of the School Adjudicator (OSA) confirmed the right to use tests as free mocks and the right to take tests late. A Head Teacher of a grammar school has confirmed in writing: `Legally I cannot stop you entering your child for our test.'  Late testing is also a legal right.

Many regions do not have catchment areas. Taking 11+ exams outside home catchments does not prejudice the balance and fairness of the testing, as tests are different. To make such a claim would imply a defunct testing process.

Note: Taking a "free mock" will cost the school money. But one would expect financially astute schools to consider the financial implications of setting an early test date. Common sense dictates an earlier test is likely to be used as a "free mock" and this has been well known to occur for many years. . The University of Durham® object to this strategy when it is a legal right. We cannot image why, as if the test is resistant to prepping, what difference would free mocks make? We believe there is no evidence that any 11+ test is resistant to prepping and practise will simply improve performance.
